How to Handle Youre Overqualified in Interviews
How to Handle Youre Overqualified in InterviewsHow to Handle Youre Overqualified in InterviewsHow to get the job youre too experienced for. It seems I continually hear this complaint, They arent hiring me because Im overqualified. One man e-mailed me about this problemI have a lot of incredible extracurricular professional activities, publishing expertise, project management experience, board leadership skills, etc. I have an MBA, and am a CPA. All of this info is on my resume because it sets me apart. However, I am concerned that people are viewing me as overqualified for lower-level jobs and eliminating me. Yet, the jobs I am truly qualified for are fairly high up and there are only a handful of openings. HelpSo what should you do if youre credentialed withgood experience and advanced education, are looking to become re-employed and are even willing to take a lower-level position? Here are a few tipsDont be tempted to Dumb DownThis strategy moves your career backward. You typically end up frustrated, not hired or worse - you find a new job you cant wait to move out of. Most employers today actually want you working at your highest ability level since productivity is key to everyones success. They also want to retain you past the many months it takes to train you for the job, so you can begin to make a contribution to the company.Do some soul searching and savvy preparation.Acknowledge that employers are reluctant to hire a person who is overqualified because they think the person is unlikely to be happy, wont stay long, might want the interviewers job or may expect fast promotion. Remember that you can be threatening to the interviewer, especially if you are truly suited for the interviewers job He may think you arent seriously interested in doing the job for which youre being hired - nor do employers want someone whos burned out or sees the job as an easy paycheck.Examine why you want the position. I need a job is not a response that will endear you to him . You must use your communication skills to convince him why a demotion is a good option. You must create a reasonable explanation. Try thisMy current position as Regional Sales Manager requires me to cover 14 states, and the job had grown into 15 nights of travel per month. This has become an increasingly difficult sacrifice for my family. I have decided to seek a major accounts-rep position that allows me to focus on my strengths - selling, sustaining top-notch client relationships and up-selling - but also allows me to go home most evenings. This is not an option at my current job. It requires a lot of out-of-town travel to do the job, which I am no longer willing to do. I believe my extensive marketing and sales skills would greatly benefit your organization in a positive way. I see this as a win/win situation for both of us. Dont show desperation. You may feel it, but it will work against your getting hired if you show how frantic you are to get a job. Too often an executive s ays, Ill abflug at any job just to get my foot in the door. That wont work - its an outdated strategy. Being willing to take any job often makes the interviewer disqualify you. She needs a competent person to perform the specific job shes hiring for.So, you must show not only that you can do it but also that you want to do it. You can offer some advantages, gained from your experience, such as My ability to solve problems and train others would be a major plus in the position. Many employers are slow to hire, yet pay well when they select someone for the position, so patience is essential.Look harder for positions for which you are qualified.Employers want a good fit and an individual who delivers results. Customize every cover letter you write and tweak your resume to match the opportunity. Be sure to address the major needs required and demonstrate results youve achieved in line with the level requested. A former CEO at a smaller company might only be a midlevel executive at a la rger organization, so be clear as to how youre leveraging past experience and leadership to help a potential employer excel.Networking is key to hearing about and landing a new job.Ask colleagues, friends, former employees, college alumni, and other contacts for referrals to new people who can help you uncover unadvertised positions. An introduction to a senior executive can open new doors and even create a job when no advertised one was available. Department of Labor statistics reveal that 63 percent of all jobs brde year were found through contacts, so network, network, NETWORK

New Window Film Reduces Energy Costs
New Window Film Reduces Energy Costs New Window Film Reduces Energy Costs New Window Film Reduces Energy Costs Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers have discovered a way to make an optical film containing hydrogel microparticles that blocks radiative heat transfer. If commercialized, the covering could reflect nearly 70 percent of the solar heat coming through a buildings windows and potentially save billions of dollars in energy costs.Smart technologies that control solar heat through windows show great promise for reducing energy consumption. Air conditioners, for example, consume high amounts of energy during hot summer months, sometimes straining the energy grid. About six percent of all the electricity produced in the U.S. is used to run air conditioning, at a total annual cost of $29 billion. To help lower those costs, research targets light management via thermochromic smart windows. Their advantages include autonomous operation and a simple design. Their performance , though, is challenged at higher l-transition temperatures, the temperature required for a substance to change from a solid, liquid, or gas state to a different state. As a result, temperature-responsive hydrogel materials are emerging as a promising alternative to conventional thermochromic materials.Certain gels can absorb water and turn transparent when hydrated, said Nicholas X. Fang, professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. This triggered us to look for materials that can change from hydrated phase to dry phase with increasing temperature.Listen to ASME TechCast Shining a New Light on Solar Farms and Grids Top Story The Critical Need for 5G Cellular ServiceThe phase transition of a palm-print area. Image MITThe team focused on thermochromic materialstemperature-sensitive materials that temporarily change phase, or color, in response to heat. They selected an emerging thermochromic material made from poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-2-Aminoethylmethacrylate hydrochloride (pNIPAm- AEMA) microparticles. These fiber-webbed spheres are filled with water. When temperatures reach 85F, the spheres constrict into tight bundles and squeeze out the water. These bundles of fibers turn the material translucent, thereby reflecting light. Its like a fishnet in water, Fang said. Each of the fibers making the net reflects a certain amount of light. But because theres a lot of water embedded in the fishnet, each fiber is harder to see. But once you squeeze the water out, the fibers become visible.Fangs team created a solution containing the microparticles, which they applied between two sheets of 12-by-12-inch glass to create a film-coated window. They also expanded the molecular chain of each microparticle, so that when it contracted in response to heat, the durchmesser was about 500 nanometers, creating more area to reflect light. When the film was exposed to light from a solar simulator, it turned frosty in response to the heat. For a regular glass window, after 30 minutes of exposure, the temperature behind the window reached 102F, Fang said. However, with our film the temperature plateaued at 93F. This shows we can block more than 75 percent of heat from the sunlight.Fangs results showed the solar modulation was effectively extended into the infrared region. An unprecedented solar transmittance modulation of 81.3 percent was achieved at about 89F with our hydrogel thermochromic device, with great scalability and stability, he said. The material could provide an affordable and energy-efficient alternative to existing smart window technologies, many of which are inefficient or, like some electrochromic windows, require more power to operate them. The film remains highly transparent below 89F. At higher temperatures, it acts as an autonomous ordnungsprinzip that rejects heat, thereby passively cooling a building while still letting in a good amount of light.Going forward, Fang plans to look for other ways to improve the films heat-shielding properties. We only scratched the very surface of this interesting optical material, he said. We are also seeking industrial collaborators to co-develop the technology for retrofitting existing windows for enhanced energy efficiency and visual comfort.Mark Crawford is an independent writer. 3 Job Search Mistakes That Ruin Things For People 50+
3 Job Search Mistakes That Ruin Things For People 50+3 Job Search Mistakes That Ruin Things For People 50+?What should I do? A company reached out to me for a phone interview and that went great. They said I have the exact experience they need. We scheduled the next interview in person. But when I walked in there to meet the person I had already spoken to, she looked like she could have been my adult child, and her whole face changed. That threw me off, and that interview welchesnt nearly as lively. Needless to say, I havent heard anything back.Age discrimination is real. Its an obstacle. But obstacle does not mean impossible. leid every HR person is going to be 26 years old. Not every employer is going to summarily reject you. You cant do anything about your age, but you can do something to avoid the mistakes people commonly make that keep them from getting hired in a reasonable time frame.Mistake 1 Not Thinking StrategicallyYouve sharpened yourstrategic thinking skills at work over the years. Now its time to apply thosesame skills to your job search. Theres no strategy in clicking apply and submit100 times every week on the job boards. However, a strategy thatworks is to specifically target small geschftslebenes. Theyre unlikely to have a recruiter, which means you can reach out directly to the hiring decision maker. Theyrealso unlikely to have a pipeline of internal candidates, so theres lesslikelihood that after 2 or 3 interviews they end up telling you they went withan internal hire. Most major metropolitan cities have a Business Journal newspaper. Pick one up. Read more than just the job ads. Dive into the paper to get your pulse on whats going on in the business sector where you live.Mistake 2 Not Talking To Anybody I know you dont want to network. I know you think its hard. But whats harder is not getting any results from sitting in your bedroom at your computer on the job board for 8 months. The key is to not act desperate. Just have a normal conversation like a normal human being with the people you already know. And I mean ALL the people, even the ones you think wouldnt be able to tell you anything.Everyone can tell you something. Everyone knows someone else. Everyone else has a network that you can tap into.Start by having a conversation about the companies where people work. Steer the conversation to whether anyone may be leaving soon, and find out who the hiring manager is. There doesnt have to be an opening right this second, but in time there may be.And if you think your network hasdried up, it hasnt, and it wont, as long as you keep on asking at the end ofevery conversation, Who else do you think I need to speak to that may behelpful to me in my search?Mistake 3 Not Picking UpThe PhoneIt can be a daunting task just calling someone out of the blue. So make it not be so out of the blue. Find out who the decision maker is, and when you call, have something prepared to say that makes sense and feels natural. You want to work at t hat specific company for a reason. What is that for you? Make sure its something that benefits the organization, not just that you want a job and need to get paid. Something about that organization caught your interest that can be the foundation of your call.Use Google News to look up something about the company that recently occurred, like they just opened a new branch or just won an industry award it looks exciting that the organization is clearly going in a forward direction. This way, when youre following up on the resume you sent in, you have something else to say besides, Did you receive my resume? How much of a difference do you think it would make if, when 300 people apply for a role, youre 1 of 10 who picks up the phone? (And if youre really scared, heres a tip call at 505 or 535 pm and leave a voice mail.)You can get hired because of your age, wisdom and experience. Thats exactly what Pam did at age 57. So did Jeff at age 52 he got 2 offers in 1 day. And so did Mark at age 59. What worked for them was finding out the 5 Secrets Smart Jobseekers Age 50+ Know That Make The Job Search EASY You can learn the same thing, so you find out what companies are looking to hire mature, experienced people, and you can have a conversation with a grown-up without having to answer demeaning, intrusive questions. Elizabeth Taylor was a great actress and even better negotiator
Elizabeth Taylor welches a great actress and even better negotiatorElizabeth Taylor welches a great actress and even better negotiatorWere all working harder than ever torepair the gender pay gapand ensure women are compensated fairly for ur hard work and kickass talent. As we pspeciesicipate inEqual Pay Dayand call on our local lawmakers todemandwage reform, its also important we continue to empower each otzu sich and educate ourselves onhow to ask for a raiseand effect change forworking moms, creative entrepreneurs, and everyone else Anotzu sich way to make sure were being treated fairly in the workplace? Learn from those fearless, confident women whove come before us.Elizabeth Taylorwelches a trailblazing businesswoman in the entertainment industry - with herbei role inCleopatrain 1963 she became the first woman to negotiate (and receive) a $1 1000000 salary. The actress was also an activist and humanitarian who valued her loved ones and helping those less fortunate. We got the ch ance to chat with Taylors longtime chief of staff Tim Mendelson to get the inside story on where Taylor learned her negotiating skills, her biggest investment regret, and how she used her influence for good.Brit + Co Before we get into the details, can you tell us a bit about your professional history with Taylor?Tim MendelsonI was brought into Elizabeths world in 1990 as an assistant - folding sweaters, hanging pictures, and running errands. Shortly after, she offered me an official position to be her personal assistant and insisted that I be her secretary, which was the most important professional role in her life. I was her chief of staff for 25 years.B+CWhen do you think Elizabeth Taylor became so business-savvy? Was there a particular moment where she took control of her career?TMElizabeth was born with an innate understanding that every human being is important and that our true value comes from how we live, the things we do, how freely we give, and whats inside our hearts. H owever, she was 15 when she realized the monetary value of the commodity that was Elizabeth Taylor, after she told the head of MGM studios that he and his studio could go straight to hell while he was berating her mother. Elizabeth assumed she would be fired but wasnt. It was then that she realized the studio didnt care what she did as long as her name made money for them. After that, she would fight in a negotiation over a single dollar, but then turn around and give it away to someone in need.B+C Did she have a mentor or someone to bounce business negotiations off of as she got more successful?TMHer third husband, Mike Todd, was a master negotiator, and she learned quite a bit about dealing in business from him, but the biggest lesson she learned came after he passed away in a plane crash. She was filmingCat on a Hot Tin Roofat the time, which was to be her last with MGM. Shed originally had one more film left in her contract, but Mike got MGM to drop it so that he and Elizabeth c ould make movies together. As soon as she finished withCat, she went to say goodbye to everyone at the studio, and they handed her another script. When she reminded them that theyd made a deal with Mike to release her early, the studio exec said, That was on a handshake, and Mikes dead. Heres your last film, honey, and it was playing a call girl. After that, Elizabeth made sure to get everything in writing, and she was careful to go over each deal point herself. She wasnt shy about asking questions or pushing back on the parts she didnt agree with. Elizabeth also asked confidently for more where it was in her favor.B+C Taylor is known for her incredible work with AIDS research - she helped found amfAR - during a time where there was a lot of fear surrounding HIV and it wasnt exactly lucrative to start an AIDS foundation. How did she use her business savvy to help with her charitable causes?TMElizabeth was clever to use her fame in combination with her personal life to make money f or the cause. She traktament the photos from her wedding, held at Michael Jacksons Neverland Ranch, to Larry Fortensky for a million dollars and used it as the seed money to start The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. She also gave her 65th birthday to ABC Networks to make money for her AIDS foundation.B+C How did she invest her money? We know she was a huge fan of fabulous jewelryTMOne of Elizabeths smartest money moves was owning her own jewelry. Whenever Elizabeth had concerns that she was spending too much, she would just say, Oh well, it will be good for the sale and bought it anyway. How right she was Her jewelry sold through Christies auction house for record-breaking numbers. Elizabeth also told me about how Richard Burton referred to her two Monet paintings as Monet in the bank, meaning they will always go up in value and are as good as cash. There were times when Elizabeth sold things, but always for a good reason. She sold her 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond while she was married to John Warner to help pay for his senate campaign. He won Another example of how Elizabeth invested in people.B+C How do you think this kind of mentality can translate to those of us who arent, uh, world-famous movie stars? Are there lessons to be learned, no matter where you are in life?TMEvery woman can celebrate and invest in themselves. Sign up for a class to further your education or help develop skills in something you feel passionate about. Buy a piece of art that inspires you or just makes you feel good - it doesnt have to be a Monet. Invest in others by mentoring and supporting women who are in need. Approach business decisions by staying true to yourself, and believe that it will all come to you when the time is right. Sometimes, we just need to stay focused for a little bit longer and practice patience. For example, when I first started working for Elizabeth, I had no idea where it would lead. I just took a chance as the opportunity was there for me. Today, as m uch as I want Elizabeth back, at least I get to talk about the qualities that made her special and hope that it will inspire others to live their lives fully empowered. Im also grateful to be in a position to continue the work she did to help people with HIV and AIDS and to carry out her wishes as best as I can. Elizabeth said, Follow your passion, and the things you need will come.B+C Can you talk to us about Taylors negotiation style and how other women could use it in their own lives?TMElizabeth played it very serious when she was in a negotiation. Its like she was going into battle, and she could be quite a warrior. She had great strength in her stillness, and she used it often. Elizabeth did not back down for any reason, but she listened more than she spoke, and when she did speak it was with great intention. If the other side had a good point that she agreed with, she let them have it.She certainly used charm as well, but judiciously and carefully. She held back as much as pos sible. One thing she never showed in negotiations was weakness or vulnerability. Elizabeth held her ground and didnt back down until she got everything she wanted. She also always made sure that there was something in it just for her. A gift, like a piece of jewelry. With that in mind, Elizabeth would encourage every woman in a negotiation to use whatever makes her special to articulate why she deserves that salary, raise, or promotion. Embrace what you love and find what drives you with the same kind of unapologetic passion that Elizabeth had. Know what youre fighting for when you walk into the room, and know that you never get anything if you dont ask for it - be bold and ask for what youre worth. Own your territory and make yourself indispensable.B+C Can you talk specifically about the negotiation forCleopatra? How do you think the lessons she learned there can be translated in a broader sense?Elizabeth knew her value and her price. After being at MGM for so much of her life and having made so many films, she at least wanted a break from it all. Fox was relentless about her playing Cleopatra, so she asked for an astronomical amount of money, thinking they would go away and leave her alone. They agreed to pay her a million dollars, and the rest is history. She was the first actress to do so, and it became her new standard fee throughout the 60s and 70s. Some time later, Elizabeth was quoted as saying, If someone is dumb enough to pay me a million dollars to make a film, Im certainly not dumb enough to turn it down.Sometimes you have to really go for it and be willing to walk away with the belief that something better will come along. In the case ofCleopatra, Elizabeth had nothing to lose. People dont respond well to desperation. It can be scary if you really need the money, but confidence and courage work better in any negotiation. Dont let them see how you are really feeling.B+C Is there one business or career decision that she regretted? What do you think she wouldve done differently?TMElizabeth was always so true herself that she didnt have regrets. Sometimes we make decisions that dont work out, but we learn much more from our mistakes than our successes. What we perceive as a mistake can be a great opportunity for lessons that we wouldnt get otherwise. Onwards and upwards, she would say. However, when Andy Warhol did the Liz series of 13 silkscreens, he offered to let her buy one for $500,000. She wanted it as a gift, seeing no reason to pay for an image of herself. In 2011, Liz 5 sold for $26,962,500 by Phillips de Pury auction house. Although the sale was right after Elizabeth passed, there were similarly valued sales before that one. She certainly regretted that missed opportunity. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

What I Wish I Knew When I Got Laid Off
What I Wish I Knew When I Got Laid OffWhat I Wish I Knew When I Got Laid OffI was laid off after working for a little over a year as a marketing assistant for a publishing company in the Bay Area. It like a bad break-up because it was a job I really loved. The whole thing felt like I was on an emotional roller-coaster, going from sad to hopeful every few days. In the months following the layoff I learned a lot about myself. Id like to share what worked for me and what I would do differently. Embrace itEmbrace the new opportunity by taking full advantage of it. The positive is that you now have all this free time to do what you want. When I was laid off, I visited friends in San Diego, Portland, Seattle and Mexico City. One thing that Im happy I did I took a class at a UC Berkeley Extension on social media marketing. Being laid off gave me the opportunity to see people I love and explore my interests. Start job hunting right awayAlthough I think you should embrace being laid off and h aving a lot of time on your hands, I dont think you should totally put off job searching. One thing that I wished I did differently was start my job search immediately. I had such ease finding a job in the past I thought I could put off my job search for a month or two. When I finally started looking for a new job a lot of employers were concerned with the time gap in my employment.Connect with your networkAn easy way to jumpstart your job search while being laid off is to let your network know youre looking for a new role. Something that youll find out is that a lot of people are willing to help you find a new job. Since youre not tied to a 9-to-5, you have the flexibility to reconnect with old colleagues at a time and place thats most convenient for them. Something Im happy I did to expand my network was research mentorship programs. I found a mentorship program with a local professional organization and was able to match up with someone who introduced me to people in their networ k who could help me on my job search.Pivot from Plan AEver since college, Ive always known that a career in marketing is what I wanted. Being laid off really made me think about what I wanted in my next role and where I wanted my career to go. Did I want to stay in the Bay Area? Should I focus on publishing? My job search started out pretty narrow only focusing on marketing jobs in publishing. When I realized my laser focus was hurting my chances of finding a job, I applied to marketing roles in different industries. Then I thought of roles that require skills that are transferrable to skills needed in marketing. I looked at roles in sales, customer happiness and project management. Six months after being laid off I landed a marketing role in financial services.

Ohio Retail and Restaurant Company Headquarters
Ohio Retail and Restaurant Company HeadquartersOhio Retail and Restaurant Company HeadquartersCleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Toledo might not seem like the retail capitals of the world, but, in fact, these are the Ohio cities some of the largest U.S. retailersandrestaurant chainshave chosen for their corporate headquarters. Depending on how you feel about living in the Midwest in general and Ohio in particular, the large number of Ohio retail HQ home offices this is either good nachrichten or bad news if youre hunting for a management-level job with corporations that do their own retailing. Retail fashion heavyweights like Abercrombie Fitch (which includes Hollister), and L Brands (which includes The Limited (which includes Victorias Secret, La Senza, Henri Bendel, PINK and Bath Body Works) have chosen not to join other iconic U.S. apparel retailers with flashy of New York headquarters locations. It is just as easy to manage a global retail chain in a state where soda is pop, where beanless chili is served over spaghetti noodles, and where two dozen American astronauts were born. Yes, were talking about Ohio. The U.S. restaurant industryshares in the Ohio love, since some of the largest restaurant chains like Wendys, Western Sizzlin, Bob Evans, and White Castle have their headquarters in Ohio cities. The home office management teams of specialty retailers like Big Lots, DSW, Jo-Ann, and Sherwin-Williams are also located in Ohio. And lets not forget that the largest U.S. grocery store chain,Kroger, calls Cincinnati Ohio its home. Theres no mistake about it - as the sixth-largest retail chain in the world, Kroger could choose to be headquartered anywhere in the U.S. Kroger chooses Ohio. More than 60 supermarket, auto parts, convenience store, eyewear, andshoeretailers agree with Kroger and other powerhouse retailing companies that Ohio is the place to be for home office headquarters. For management leveland visual merchandising job hunters, this is e ither good news or bad news, depending on if you believethat professional sports are actually about winning.? Although theretail career path still allows retail employees to climb the retail, corporate ladder from an entry-level retail store job to a retail management position, most often these days, retail headquarters jobs require specific retail education and experience. Most upper-level retail executives today start their retail careers in headquarters positions, not as a retail store cashier.
