3 Job Search Mistakes That Ruin Things For People 50+3 Job Search Mistakes That Ruin Things For People 50+?What should I do? A company reached out to me for a phone interview and that went great. They said I have the exact experience they need. We scheduled the next interview in person. But when I walked in there to meet the person I had already spoken to, she looked like she could have been my adult child, and her whole face changed. That threw me off, and that interview welchesnt nearly as lively. Needless to say, I havent heard anything back.Age discrimination is real. Its an obstacle. But obstacle does not mean impossible. leid every HR person is going to be 26 years old. Not every employer is going to summarily reject you. You cant do anything about your age, but you can do something to avoid the mistakes people commonly make that keep them from getting hired in a reasonable time frame.Mistake 1 Not Thinking StrategicallyYouve sharpened yourstrategic thinking skills at work over the years. Now its time to apply thosesame skills to your job search. Theres no strategy in clicking apply and submit100 times every week on the job boards. However, a strategy thatworks is to specifically target small geschftslebenes. Theyre unlikely to have a recruiter, which means you can reach out directly to the hiring decision maker. But whats harder is not getting any results from sitting in your bedroom at your computer on the job board for 8 months. The key is to not act desperate. Just have a normal conversation like a normal human being with the people you already know. And I mean ALL the people, even the ones you think wouldnt be able to tell you anything.Everyone can tell you something. Everyone knows someone else. Everyone else has a network that you can tap into.Start by having a conversation about the companies where people work. Steer the conversation to whether anyone may be leaving soon, and find out who the hiring manager is. There doesnt have to be an opening right this second, but in time there may be.And if you think your network hasdried up, it hasnt, and it wont, as long as you keep on asking at the end ofevery conversation, Who else do you think I need to speak to that may behelpful to me in my search?Mistake 3 Not Picking UpThe PhoneIt can be a daunting task just calling someone out of the blue. So make it not be so out of the blue. Find out who the decision maker is, and when you call, have something prepared to say that makes sense and feels natural. You want to work at t hat specific company for a reason. What is that for you? Make sure its something that benefits the organization, not just that you want a job and need to get paid. This way, when youre following up on the resume you sent in, you have something else to say besides, Did you receive my resume?
